Name: Elmer Dickens
Facility: Albany, New York VA Medical Center
Years of Service: 2
Since April, 2008 HHV has provided the Biloxi, Mississippi VA Medical Center with Craft Care Specialist (CCS) Elmer Dickens.
Dickens, who holds a degree in recreation therapy, worked for 33 years at the Biloxi VA Medical Center as assistant chief of voluntary services and public relations director until retiring in 2003. Dickens’ retirement, however, did not end his desire to remain connected with veterans and helping veterans.
"They love the HHV program. Many veterans have stated how much this program helps them to relax," said Dickens. "Favorite [arts & crafts kits] include moccasins and [model] cars. They also like woodwork and wallets."
"I am honored to work for HHV and serve the veterans here," Dickens added. "HHV's program here is a great opportunity for our hospitalized veterans to participate in, [as] it keeps them active both mentally and physically."
In his spare time, Dickens enjoys golf, sporting events and fishing.
